Richard Baker
Richard is a freelance composer, musical director, improviser and vocal coach. He frequently works with Mischief as an improvising musician on Mischief Movie Night, including the live-streamed and recent tours, and for the West End run at the Arts Theatre.
He initially joined Mischief Theatre in 2013 for their show Lights! Camera! Improvise!, which played several sold out runs at the Edinburgh Festival before a monthly residency at the Duchess Theatre, then becoming Mischief Movie Night. This close working relationship led to composing music and songs for Peter Pan Goes Wrong. His other recent improvisation work includes the last six Annual 50-Hour London Improvathons (Finsbury Park Theatre, LOST Theatre and Wiltons Music Hall) with Extempore Theatre.
As a musical director Richard has worked in a number of London theatres, including the Palace, the Vaudeville, the Ambassadors and Charing Cross Theatre, and has played on several national tours of the UK. Credits as MD include Princess Ida at the Finborough Theatre; Lucky Stiff, Road Show, Anyone Can Whistle and Our House at the Union Theatre and The Wandering Scholar at the King’s Head Theatre. He was recently appointed as the Associate Musical Director for NewsRevue at the Canal Cafe Theatre, after nearly a decade of working with them intermittently.
Richard co-created The NewsRevue Podcast, and has composed jingles and incidental music for a variety of other online projects. His other recent composition work includes the new musical Tasting Notes, which played at Southwark Playhouse last year, the short film The Art of Za Deal, and music for the plays Indebted to Chance and The Recruiting Officer at the Old Red Lion. RIchard is also an audition pianist and vocal coach, and has worked at a number of drama schools including LAMDA, Rose Bruford and the Urdang Academy. He is an MD/repetiteur for the company Opera Anywhere, and has worked at the Old Vice Tunnels, the Islington Pleasance, Buxton Opera House and Royal Festival Hall.
